The 2024 Genesis GV60 makes a rolling design statement


Few automakers are as on-point with their design game as the Genesis at the moment, and the automaker’s first electric car is no exception.

In an era of flamboyant design and massive grilles, Genesis has figured out how to stand out from the crowd with the 2024 GV60, with delightful details and reasonable efficiency.

But it didn’t deliver enough workable driving range for me in Minnesota, where chargers are few and far between; The rear seat is a compromise for three; It has some uncomfortable body movements; And it’s not cheap.

Here are its pros and cons 2024 Genesis GV60 After a week the children were taken to activities around town and made it to the theater one night.

Pro: The Genesis GV60 stands out

From the twin-slit LED headlights and taillights to the clamshell hood and short overhangs, the GV60 looks great. It’s the polar opposite of a beached whale of a melted bar of soap, like the Tesla Model Y design. The details inside are more unique—or more gimmicky, depending on who you ask—with a glowing orb that flips the trick upon powering up to reveal a twist-o-later rotating gear selector. The buttons are laced with ribbing carved into them. There is also a ribbed volume knob. It’s all tactile and beautiful, right down to the front center console metallic cover that feels like alligator skin.

Con: Genesis GV60 can get movement wrong

At slow to moderate speeds around the suburbs the GV60 is firm and controlled. If it never hits the highway or goes above 50 mph, one might think it’s a luxury vehicle tuned by a German automaker. But my performance model’s adaptive dampers rely on a camera-based system that gives the suspension a scan of the road. Rough Midwestern highway transitions or broken roads occasionally throw the system into a confusing, almost brittle ride. A highway bridge transition will simply jump if the suspension is too high to read ahead of time.

Pro: The Genesis GV60 offers reasonable efficiency

During the first half of my week with the Genesis GV60 Performance, the gauge cluster noted that the powertrain averaged between 3.0 and 3.1 miles per kwh. That’s effective in our book. Efficiency took a hit with a final average of 2.7 mi/kwh over the course of 217 miles with strong 30-35 mph headwinds once Midwest temperatures dropped from the upper 20s to 30s. Still not bad.

Con: The Genesis GV60 falls short in the cold-weather range

The Genesis GV60 EPA-rated range can be up to 294 miles. The more powerful dual-motor GV60 Performance trim tested had an EPA-rated range of just 235 miles from its 77.4-kwh battery. Realistically, in my mix of winter driving, this car seems comfortable for 185 miles at a time. That can be time-consuming and painful on a road trip; Well, it has a fast 800-volt electrical architecture that allows a 10-80% charge in 18 minutes, reaching a peak of 240 kw.

Pro: The Genesis GV60 packs a lot of space into a small package

Despite being short (about 178 inches long) and small on the outside, the GV60 is big on the inside. It’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? Four adults fit comfortably. It gives an open, airy feel due to the efficient packaging. A low, horizontal dashboard and short hood provide the driver with an elegant look ahead.

Con: The Genesis GV60 fits four, not five

The second row of the Genesis GV60 has five seat belts and three seats. I would not recommend this car for more than four people. My mother-in-law, wife and 10-year-old daughter didn’t have enough width – a “squeezed my tuchus” situation – and seat belt positioning magnified the discomfort.

Perhaps the biggest knock against the GV60 is how expensive it is. Starting competitively at $53,350, including $1,350 for destination, it costs $71,320 as tested. That’s basically $10,000 more than fully loaded Volvo C40 Recharge And $20,000 more than a loaded Tesla Model Y (which is currently eligible for all of the $7,500 federal tax credit). Slightly smaller in size and quite a step up in range as tested, the GV60 costs the same, if not so well-equipped. Cadillac LyricIt’s still a great style statement.

In base rear-wheel-drive form with a range of 294 miles the GV60 can make an argument for itself on design alone. But if you prefer the back seat, as tested, or plan to take road trips, it’s hard to argue that this rolling masterpiece offers value.
