Rivian R1T pickups, electric or not, top the IIHS safety list

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) now has only one pickup truck model on its Top Safety Pick+ honor roll, and it’s all-electric.

New Round Exam, The Rivian R1T Electric Truck Upgraded from its previous Top Safety Pick to Top Safety Pick+ status by the IIHS.

Elevating Factor: Updated moderate overlap front test results show stronger occupant safety for both rear seat and front occupants.

The main difference in the moderate overlap test, the IIHS explained in its reported results, is the addition of a test dummy in the rear seat. In the R1T test, troops remained at low risk of head, neck and chest injury, with the dummy’s head a safe distance from the front seatback.

The insurance-backed safety organization’s list of top safety performers has narrowed considerably this year. That’s because a Top Safety Pick+ award requires a top “Good” rating in the IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front test, although a top “Good” rating in the original moderate overlap test remains sufficient for Top Safety Pick status.

To earn one of the top-safety accolades, vehicles need to earn top “Good” ratings in the short-overlap frontal test and updated cross-over test, as well as headlights rated “Good” or next-best “Acceptable” across all trims. Model levels. Models require a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the organization’s revised front crash prevention test series, including both daylight and dark test runs. In the case of the R1T, it earns an “Acceptable” rating, according to the IIHS.
